Method:

first I took the first ten pages from topic 1 (Algebra).  Rather than use all ten pages, I decided to pick the ones that would be helpful for students needing help doing their algebra homework.

I tried looking for backwards links on both Google and Altavista (both accept the "link:" followed by the URL (http:// and all) in the main search box).

It seemed that in general Google included links from the same website (although it grouped them), while Altavista only listed pages external to the site.

In terms of external links it seemed like Altavista found more, although that wasnt' always the case.  I decided to take the union of both sets.

Also, google sometimes hides some of the results, saying they're very similar, but I decided to include those files as well.

Altavista is even more annoying, only listing one page from each site, so I had to select the "More Pages from <site>" link as well.

In order to ignore the sort order used by the two search engines and to make scoring the sites easier, I sorted the lists alphabetically.

Also (and this is not very realistic) I observed any redirects used by the websites.

Furthermore I ignored any broken links (also unrealistic).
